Programs that enhance the quality of life for all animals, educate the community regarding responsible pet care, and enhance spay/neuter and adoption services. Responsive grants are three-year, general operating support grants awarded to organizations whose services align with the vision of at least one of our four primary impact areas. Priority is given to organizations serving under-represented and under-served communities. A diverse cohort of 15 organizations was recently awarded grants by the Henry Luce Foundation—part of a new initiative to identify and support work in the areas of Democracy, Ethics and Public Trust.

These challenges can prompt funders to shift towards more proactive approaches. The Responsive Grants process is designed to leverage community leadership, convening power, and capacity building efforts to advance equity in San Antonio. By providing general operating awards, we take an asset-based approach to allow organizations to focus on mission and address the needs of individuals and communities they serve. Organizations applying for funding must be tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofits, government institutions or schools in the greater Wilson community, whose funds will be directed toward the enhancement of the healthcare outcomes of the Wilson community. Qualifying organizations must have at least three years of successful operations before a grant can be considered.

- The funder champions the cause, hence the style’s nickname of “proactive grantmaking”.
- These issues, such as transportation access, health care access, and homelessness, take significant time and effort to address.
- Funders who feel they have done a good job of transitioning to more proactive approaches agree on the importance of clear, inclusive, and transparent communications with those who might be affected.
- Additionally, organizations that submit a joint application outlining the collaborative use of their common resources to achieve a greater level of efficiency will be given special consideration.
Simply put, the choice of grantmaking style is dependent on the funding organisation, its mission and its desired outcomes. This method of grantmaking requires the funder to build relationships with the grantees and even other funding organisations. It also involves the use of best practices to ensure that the funds are properly utilised. The funding organisation is saddled with the responsibility of taking the first steps and ultimately ensuring the actualisation of the grantmaking. The funder champions the cause, hence the style’s nickname of “proactive grantmaking”. Strategic grantmaking is a grantmaking style in which the funding organisation takes the initiative to lay out a detailed scheme to attend to a certain area of focus.
That kind of support makes a real difference,” said Clara Manuzza, Community Impact Coordinator at Migrant Legal Aid. The site visit allows Foundation staff and trustees to better understand the request for funding, and usually takes the form of a brief in-person meeting at the location where the funding will be used. As the board of directors periodically refines its areas of interest, the Foundation may limit the number of responsive proposals it accepts to those that specifically complement its strategic direction. Well, since responsive grantmaking works better for a funder wading into the waters of a new issue area, it will help the organisation gain the required knowledge. When the funding organisation has gained sufficient knowledge about that issue, it can proceed to employ a masterful strategic grantmaking scheme. A great example of responsive grantmaking is the number of organisations that rallied around the COVID-19 crisis to provide a way for people and organisations in need to submit requests for funds. General operating support, also known as an unrestricted grant, can be used to cover any of a non-profit’s expenses, with a few exceptions (see “What we do not fund”).

Restrictions for Responsive Grants
While strategic grantmaking and responsive grantmaking seem like exact opposites, we must emphasise that they’re not like oil and water. That’s to say they are not mutually exclusive and can very well accommodate one another. The strategic approach will work better if the funding organisation is certain that it wants to make an impact in a specific issue area. Also, if the funder considers making numerous grants to be ineffective in yielding the desired outcome, a strategic style is ideal. Navigating a shift in strategy can create challenges and uncertainties, and can also open up reseponsive grants new and exciting opportunities.
Supports organizations and programs that enhance the quality of life for all animals, educate the community regarding responsible pet care, and enhance spay/neuter and adoption services. On the other hand, if funders only respond to unsolicited requests, three challenges can arise. First, funders often find their giving is “an inch deep and a mile wide.” Second, if a funder seeks to address a specific issue or need, a more responsive approach may not uncover efforts that could achieve the greatest impact. Finally, without clear goals and targeted strategies, it can be difficult to measure progress towards social impact goals.
